What IS teaching abroad?

Working at an international school in another country as a K-12 teacher is the focus of this section. It is designed for educators licensed in their home countries with aspirations of continuing this practice in a new country (i.e., not teaching English, TEFL, ESL, etc.). International education means working at a school accredited by different accrediting bodies from around the world (such as WASC, IB, CIS, etc.). It also means working with educators and students from around the world who live and work in country.

  • Work Environment – International schools usually have smaller class sizes, better resources, and offer more paid professional development.
  • Travel – Perhaps the number one reason to live and teach internationally is the opportunity to travel more around the world than you would if you were in your home country.

Why would you want to teach abroad?

We’ve all been there at some point, teaching at home, wondering if we made the right career choice. We are educators, and while we know teaching is a rewarding career, we also know the heavy toll it can take on us. There’s nothing wrong with teaching in your home country, but if you yearn for more, then teaching internationally might be a better option. Let’s take a look at some of the perks of working in an international school:

  • Pay – Depending on the state and/or country of origin, you might have a higher base salary in the international education world.
  • Benefits – International schools offer some wonderful benefits, such as worldwide healthcare, rent coverage, and little or no taxes. All of this, even with a lower salary, can lead to HUGE savings!
